Public rights of way give everyone the legal right to walk certain routes across land in England and Wales. Cheshire East Council is responsible for maintaining and recording these paths.
Cheshire East Council has produced a draft 10-year plan for public rights of way across the borough. The consultation closed on 24 May 2026, but the draft plan remains available to read online.
The plan is built around three objectives:
Keep existing paths open, safe and usable through vegetation management, surfacing, signage and bridges.
Make paths more accessible and better connected, including replacing stiles with gates and identifying missing links in the network.
Encourage more people to use the network responsibly, including supporting active travel to school, working with health teams on social prescribing, and refreshing digital route guides.
